The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety just started recommending a new “brain training” driver safety program called DriveSharp, developed by Posit Science. DriveSharp is a computerized cognitive assessment and training tool based on Karlene Ball’s research on older adults’ cognitive fitness and driving.

Commenting on this news, Peter Kissinger, CEO of the AAA Foundation, recently said that “Part of making our nation’s roads safer is helping mature drivers who wish to stay active – a quickly growing population – maintain or improve their driving safety.”

We have Peter Kissinger with us to discuss the context for this innovative initiative.

Question: Peter, I appreciate your time. In order to set the context, would you introduce the role and priorities of the AAA Foundation?

Answer: Sure. As you know, AAA has over 50 million members. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety prioritizes four main areas of work:

- Introduce a culture of traffic safety. It is an outrage that there is a driving-related death every 13 minutes in the US, and yet, we seem to accept this as status quo

- Improve road safety, especially on rural roads, where almost 60% of the deaths occur,

- Improve safety among teens, one of the highest risk groups

- Improve safety among seniors, another high-risk group.

Q: I understand your priorities are thee safety of teenagers and older drivers?

A: Yes. You have probably seen the U-shaped risk curve that shows how accident risks are very high among teenagers, then decrease and remain stable until our 60s, and then increase again.

We have promoted initiatives such as DriverZED (see www.driverzed.org) to help teenagers better identify and manage the typical sources of risk, so they advance faster through the learning curve. For older adults who want to keep driving we need to ensure the right balance between the privilege of driving with the right of mobility – we know that losing one’s ability to drive has negative consequences for the person.

Q: Given aging population trends, it is clear we need to introduce better systems to balance those two goals you just outlined -safety and mobility. Do you think as a society we are prepared?

A: I don’t think we are, and I am pessimistic that we will be in the short term. This is a very important problem: official estimates say that the proportion of all drivers who are over 65 years of age will grow from 15% today to 25% in 2025.

Let me explain the context: two years ago we put together a workshop to identify the state of the research and the state of the practice of driver safety among older adults. The main conclusion was that the current system of licensing is inadequate, inconsistent and does not reflect the research available. For example, age per se is not the most meaningful indicator of driver safety since different people inside the same age group may have different levels of cognitive ability that influence their driving fitness.

The problem is that this is a very sensitive arena: the quality of the DMV is usually measured by wait times and ease to renew the license….so it is going to be tough for any politician to challenge this state of things and introduce serious initiatives based on better driving fitness screening and assessment tools.

Some states like Maryland and California are leading innovation based on recent research; but it remains to be seen if their best practices will be adopted more widely.

Q: Innovation will probably spread faster when presented as a preventive intervention to maintain driver fitness, such as what the AAA Foundation just announced with Posit Science. Can you explain the rationale for your initiative?

A: Exactly. The main characteristics of the problem are obvious to anyone involved in driver safety research. The challenge is what we can do about it. In our work we constantly evaluate many potential programs, for example how to get the medical community more engaged, and we decided to offer a cognitive screening and training program such as DriveSharp.

We decided to recommend DriveSharp for two reasons. First, it is validated both as a screening tool of driver safety and as a training tool of cognitive functions (useful field of view, speed of processing) that are critical for driving especially among older adults. Second, the technology makes it highly scalable – many drivers can easily access the benefits at an affordable cost.

We really believe, based on the research we have seen, that this program can help reduce the crash rates among older drivers, but we of course need to analyze how many of AAA’s 51 million members (and other drivers) end up using it and what benefits they will get. Past research has shown we should expect to see a 50% reduction in at-fault crash risk for those that complete the program.

Q: Assuming the results are as good as you expect, what would be some logical next steps for policy makers and auto insurers?

A: I think that insurance companies will start to see the value of these programs quickly and will offer them for free or at a deep discount to their members because they will understand the direct financial benefits from doing so -the financial benefits of having safer drivers.

It will take a while for policy-makers to catch up. But I do believe that in the longer term we will see this type of technology introduced as part of the mainstream licensing process.

The United States and Canada are experiencing an increased young driver population after years of a decreased population due to the baby boom echo. Simultaneously, enrollment in Driver’s Education courses has declined. With our technological advancements as a society, we should be able to offer a high tech, more comprehensive training system for our young drivers.

Studies show that for effective and lasting crash prevention techniques to be taught both skill and motivational aspects must be addressed effectively. Therefore, educational training and behavioral change intervention is needed to produce a decrease in the amount of traffic crashes in young drivers. New drivers need to learn to handle a vehicle as well as interact with other road users. It takes several years for a driver to reach mature risk levels as the only way to reach this level is by gaining experience.

The linking of parents and community influences as well as personal involvement and incentives would likely have positive results. These results would likely be produced within each individual community through its own efforts. Interactive media could be used to enhance perceptual and decision skills. Studies show that video games can increase attentional capacity. Therefore, the integration of interactive gaming type activities could help improve these skills. Integrating this curriculum to areas of personal and social values, risk taking, self esteem, peer pressure, health protection etc. could foster an ingrained understanding of the subject matter. Pairing a deep understanding of the responsibility to other drivers with the skill needed to operate a vehicle safely is an optimal situation.

Driver’s Education definitely needs to be updated. It will benefit us as a society to have skilled, confident and prepared drivers on the road. Small advancements have been made. Many states are allowing a student to take an approved CD ROM based or online course. There is also a downloadable Drivers Ed PC Game. Prospective drivers can practice driving online and complete practice tests with this interactive game. However, the posted reviews of this game indicate that partakers found this game non-engaging and boring. This may not be a representative sample as people who enjoy the game may be too busy playing to fill out the review!

Offering an option of time in a driving simulator would be a great motivator to get new drivers to attend Driver’s Ed. Interactive computer software games that propose different situations and scores according to the drivers handling of the situation is a less expensive suggestion. Take into consideration the video gaming phenomenon and then show me a teenager that refuses to practice his video game! Video gaming can accomplish both the educational training and the behavioral change intervention.

Post baby boom echo has found an increased young driver population for the United States and Canada. This increase in new drivers is accompanied by a decline in enrollment in Driver’s Education courses. We should be able to offer a high tech, more comprehensive training system for our young drivers. Driving simulators and driving video games are two promising avenues for revamping Driver’s Education!

Despite the many misconceptions about the HGV industry, there are many people who still consider a career in the HGV industry.  As much as the HGV drivers don’t reflect an attractive lifestyle, they earn very hefty salaries for their hard work and have very good chances of moving into advanced positions once they prove their capability.

There are many misconceptions about the HGV industry, the most outstanding one being that a career in the HGV industry is meant for men only which is not the case. As much as the number of female drivers in the HGV industry is less than that of men, it does imply that HGV industry is only for men. The number of female HGV drivers is slowly but steadily on the rise. This number could have been much higher if only the current generation could look beyond the gender factor and initiate a paradigm shift as far as the HGV industry gender misconception is concerned.

Despite HGV industry facing certain challenges, it enjoys several advantages that other industries can only imagine. Some of the benefits of working in the HGV industry include your own prerogative to decide the amount of work you can handle, when you want to work. The other advantage is the flexibility of the working hours. For those without families, they can work for long hours and earn more money. On the other hand, for those with families, they are free to balance their time between work and family so that they are not kept way from their families for long because of work.

Another advantage of working in the HGV industry is that the number of working hours have been reduced to 48 from the previous 65 hours a week with a minimum pay of 26,000 and a maximum of 34,000 pounds annually. This pay is far much better than the national average in other industries. With the technological advancement, the working conditions of HGV drivers have tremendously improved through the introduction of new trucks which are not only comfortable but also come music for your entertainment. The trucks also come with air-conditioning as well as GPS system that makes it much easier for the driver to select the best routes for his deliveries.

Once you have had sufficient experience as a HGV driver, there are opportunities in the HGV industry for you to move advance your career in the HGV industry. After you have proved yourself as a competent HGV driver for a sufficient period of time, you can be promoted to the position of an instructor to train learners who want to become HGV drivers as well as teaching them all the skills as well as how to drive safely to successfully make it in their HGV tests.

As an instructor, you will plan customized lessons for every student after assessing the student’s knowledge as well as skills so that after successfully completing the lessons, the student should be able to:

•    Check the vehicle for basic maintenance
•    Control the vehicle with confidence
•    Comprehend the driving law and Highway Code
•    Understand road safety
•    Know how to deal with emergencies

After acquiring good experience as an instructor, you will be qualified to become a specialist instructor, which is a higher rank in the HGV industry. This position involves training other employees for the company on site instead of hiring one from somewhere else or training one of the employees for the job.

A career in the HGV industry is not a dead end career as most people think. There are a lot of opportunities to move up your career ladder in the HGV industry once you have decided to be a HGV driver. Apart from advancing your career, you will not only be compensated adequately at every stage of your career ladder but also retain your working hours as well as a very flexible workday. HGV industry has a lot of potential of becoming a lucrative career as time goes by especially with the technological advancement in the HGV industry.

The job of a train driver is very exciting indeed. In fact, many of us aspire to become train drivers. However, this job is not as easy as it appears to be. There are a few things that are to be followed in order to become one.

However, the first crucial step is to fill out the application form for the train driver, with extreme accuracy and attention. It is extremely vital because the whole selection procedure depends on this. The procedure advances through levels, where the aspiring train driver must answer correctly. Only this will guarantee his entry into the next stage. This is followed by the really technical part of the entire procedure. The candidate has to clear a requisite number of tests, out of which the most important ones are the Psychometric Tests. Other than this, the aspiring train driver must progress through the Mechanical Comprehension test, the Group Bourdon Test, the Fast Reaction and Coordination tests, and the Trainability for Rules and Regulations test. All these are extremely integral elements of the selection procedure and must be studied separately by the candidates. The best way is to deal with these complex exams by preparing for them in advance, by using sample papers.

The interviews can be dealt with much the same way. A potential train driver must have adequate preparations with mock interviews, learn to assess sample questions, prepare appropriate responses. Handling the pressure during the interview procedure goes a long way to show the mental and emotional stability of the candidate. Train drivers need to be very aware and alert of their surroundings.

Just prior to the selection round, where the candidates are made to comprehend the actual role of the train driver, all the aspiring recruits are sent to train on an intensive training course for a day. Whatever knowledge is gained has to be well applied in the training process. A train driver must understand the importance of being a bearer of proper customer service as well as being able to take tremendous pressure as and when according to the needs of the situation. This one-day course dramatically improves the selection potential of the candidates. The entire job expectation from a train driver is explained, including the salary which is about 30000 pounds.

Driving a train is very different from driving a bus or a car and it needs a lot of assurance and attentiveness. As this is a position that demands you to be very responsible, it is of utmost importance that the training is done wisely. Ideally a train driver should know how to react in pressure situations and should always be stable.

Time management is one of the biggest challenges most people face. Everyone works differently, and everyone has a different method of getting the most out of every day, but what everyone does have in common is the fact that they wish they could get more out of every day.

One of the advantages of technological advancements is that they make it possible for us to do more every day. For HGV drivers, one of the most useful inventions is the Global Positioning System. The GPS device fits onto the truck and then records where it goes, where it is, and when it needs to get maintenance work done. There are several advantages of having this as far as productivity goes.

Firstly, you can pre-plan your routes. You will always know where you are and there will be no lost time because of asking for directions or getting lost. This will save innumerable hours every day, making it possible for you to do more every day.

The second advantage is that you can kill two birds with one stone by picking up new orders that are in the area of your delivery. You won’t have to make two trips this way, and thus save time and money. Thirdly, you will always know when your truck is due for maintenance, making it possible for you to save money as well as plan your assignments out in advance.

There are also some other basic things you need to keep in mind as an HGV driver. There are twenty four hours in every day, which is a limitation you will need to understand. You cannot work more than this limit, obviously. Another important thing to remember is that you can’t work twenty four hours every day. You will need about eight hours of sleep, and another four to five hours for eating, relaxing and general activities. That leaves you with about eleven to twelve hours every day for work.

When you are deciding how to spend the rest of these twelve hours, you need to remember one thing. Fitting big things into your schedule first allows you to fit in the smaller things in the gaps. For example, if you have a big assignment that will take you a few days to deliver on, then you need to plan that in first or the smaller things you will schedule for every day will never allow it to happen.

Another great way to manage your time effectively is to give yourself vacations. While that may sound counterproductive, think of these vacations as rewards to meeting goals. Since you will know that you will get a reward for hitting a goal, like delivering on eight big jobs, you will motivate yourself to do more every day.

There are plenty of time management tips that you can use, but the simplest thing to know is that if you plan your days in advance, and are aware of why you are putting in the work, you can motivate yourself to do more every day.

Modern day air travel has many problems associated with it. Crowded airports, the stress of checking in through security and even mother natures attempts to cancel flights, never mind the ever present threat of terrorism, has put a lot of people off flying for good. Thats why increasing numbers of people are turning to coach travel as a safe, comfortable and very convenient alternative to flying on their holidays. If you enjoy meeting people and would like to jump at the chance of driving all over the country and often further afield into continental Europe than perhaps its time to consider a career as a long distance coach driver.

Now, tempting though it may be, you cant just hop into the drivers seat and take off.Every coach driver has to undergo a series of rigorous training sessions and they must satisfy a number of exams both written and practical, before they are allowed to take a coach load of people out on their own. The responsibility of looking after 50 or so lives is not to be underestimated.This responsibility is well rewarded though with attractive salaries, an interesting job and, of course the ability to work more or less as your own boss. As long as you keep your passengers safe and comfortable and get them to their destination on time that is!

Ever since it was introduced in 2003, the European CPC Drivers Directive has been a requisite for both coach operators and drives alike. As a new driver you will be expected to take a comprehensive written and practical examination in order to pass the test. The Certificate Of Professional Competence or CPC as it is known, covers everything from being a safe and courteous driver up to advanced driving skills and knowledge of the law. Even experienced qualified drivers cannot avoid this Directive as they are also required to take part in continuity training. This involved doing 7 hours of training , on average, in any 12 month period and is designed to ensure that their skills and knowledge of safe operating practices remain up to date.

Thanks to a number of training centres located all around the country its quite easy to find somewhere to do your CPC transport training. However, a word of caution is needed. You need to make sure that any centre you choose is regulated by the proper authorities , or the JAUPT – the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training to be more precise. This is a government agency that tests the testers so to speak. If a CPC transport training centre is approved by this body then you can be assured that they are properly qualified to issue your CPC transport training certificate.

If you are willing to put the effort in, its not all that difficult to get CPC qualified.However, this effort will be well rewarded, so if you fancy a career on the road that allows you to meet all kinds of interesting people and visit great locations all over the country, or further afield, then you really should look at being a coach driver.

When young people start thinking about the careers they would like to have, some wonder about the possibility of a career in the haulage industry. HGV drivers may not have a very glamorous life, but they get to make good money by working hard and there is the potential to progress further in this career if you are good enough.
Another common misperception is that this is a career only males should consider. While there are fewer female lorry drivers out there, the number is growing and should keep growing if the younger generation moves past the gender issues and allows this shift to take place.

The best thing about this career is that there is a lot of freedom. The hours are very flexible and you get to decide when you work, and how much you work. If you want to work long hours because you don’t have a family, you can do so and earn enough to live comfortably and save. However, if you do have a family, you can make sure you’re home most nights for dinner.

An additional benefit is the advances in technology that have taken place. Modern trucks are very comfortable, with air-conditioning and your favourite music. You will be able to pick the best routes with the result of your GPS system. In the past few years, this has become a profession that pays more than the national average (with wages being between 26,000 and 34,000 pounds per year). Also, there has been a decrease in the number of hours you must work in a week, down to 48 from 65.

There are also opportunities for career growth in this industry. After you have had significant experience in haulage, you can move on to become an instructor for future drivers. You will be required to teach students how to drive safely and help them develop the skills they will need to pass their HGV tests.

You will be required to assess each student’s skills and knowledge and plan customized lessons for them based on this research. At the end of the lessons, the student must be able to control the vehicle with confidence, understand road safety, know the driving law and Highway Code as well as know how to deal with emergencies and be able to check the vehicle for basic maintenance.

After you had had several years of experience as an instructor, you will be able to get further qualifications to become a specialist instructor. Sometimes, companies will hire or train one of their drivers to become a specialist instructor so that the training of other employees can take place on site.

There are plenty of opportunities to advance your career should you choose to become an HGV driver. By no means is this a dead end career, and you can earn plenty of money in each of the stages, while retaining control over the number of hours you work and with a flexible workday. Furthermore, with the advances in technology, this career is going to become more and more profitable as the years go on.

Being a young driver brings problems not only to the society as a whole but to auto insurance providers as well. Statistic shows that each year 5,000 teenagers ages 16 to 20 die of fatal injuries caused by car accidents. And about 400,000 drivers ages 16 to 20 will be seriously injured.

The risk is more among young males who are always hot for speed and new adventures. These statistics gave the auto insurance companies the idea to raise insurance premium for teenagers which is practical for their business. Alternatively, there are solutions to help lower teenagers’ auto insurance rates.

In every state, graduated driving license (GDL) are designed to help young drivers adjust from being amateur to being a little expert in driving before he is put behind the wheel. This will place them in a lower risk situation.

Studies show that healthy implementation of GDL laws help lower the percentage of crash accidents among 16 year old drivers by 40 %. Advanced driving training is also an advantage for those who give their time for it. It may lower your premium up to 20% or even more. This is viewed by insurance companies as positive towards your driving score because you are doing something to improve your driving skill.

For parents, they should not purchase a high performing car for their teenager. It is not only expensive but dangerous for hot young drivers. A full coverage of high performing cars ranges from $1500 to $3000 a year for male young drivers. It is a little less for their female counter part. Safety gears and anti theft devices should be installed to expensive cars. This is to protect your car from untoward robbery and destruction. Insurance companies may give discounts if safety devices are furnished.

Another is telling your son to limit the passengers with his same age. Seat belts are not enough for too many passengers. Giggling and merry making and talking cannot be avoided. Similarly, loud music and phone calls are all source of the driver’s distraction which may lead to vehicular accident.

Ask for discount for young drivers. There are insurance companies who give discount for teenagers in exchange for a promise not to violate some driving rules like wearing of seatbelt at all times. Sometimes they give first accident forgiveness as some companies do.

Lastly, advise your son to do away with some modifications for the moment. Any changes may cause their premium to go up. Most especially if the alteration has something to do with the performance of the car.

Over all, ignoring these tips may cause auto insurance companies to remain in their decision to offer young drivers their high share of premiums. Lowering their premium will become increasingly difficult. In contrast following these tips may improve their driving score which is a main determinant in their premium rate.

1. Integration tools.  GP Integration Manager is recommended to all GP customers, as it could be considered as end user friendly plus it has advanced integration even driven scripts and other methods to create very complex and sophisticated integration.  Usually we train you programmers to build integration on SQL Views and Advanced ODBC integration on Microsoft ODBC Text driver (where you can unionize, group, weed out records from original text file), plus give them directions on VBA scripting for Integration events: Before Integrations (setup integration variables, such as dates), Before document commit (to alter the document), After Integration (where you can update related records in custom tables via Microsoft ADO technology).  Second integration tool we would like to mention here is eConnect SDK, which is optimal for accessing GP objects from such applications as Microsoft Visual Studio project for custom eCommerce.  If you are experienced C# or VB.Net programmer with good exposure to XML and SQL Stored Procedures, eConnect should be simple enough for you, assuming that you are reasonably familiar with Dynamics GP objects: SOP Invoice, Customer, Inventory Item, GL Account, etc.  For EDI integrations to GP we recommend you to process EDI files directly in Integration Manager (you can specify there custom field separator, if required) or parse EDI file in SQL Server Linked Server (with precisely formatted SQL Select Statement) and then deploy Integration Manager Advanced ODBC Query as a base

Customization Tools.  Two traditional tools are Dexterity and Modifier with VBA scripting.  Modifier is targeted to simple GP screens customizations and custom buttons animation with VBA event driven scripts.  Dexterity is more fundamental and it was introduced in earlier 1990s as Great Plains Dynamics architecture.  Dex has its own Integrated Development Environment and Sanscript programming language (built as the shell in C++).  We provide Dexterity training via web sessions to dedicated developers in your organization – often we provide training having your specific project as a study model, as the whole tables structure is too broad for being covered in the training.  There are also relatively new tools, such as Extender, where you can extend GP with new screens not being programmer (also you can add Dexterity Sanscript scripts to Extender objects, if you use Enterprise version of Extender)

3. Reporting Tools.  We need to mention FRx Financial Reporting, it is perfectly formalized and if you are professional accountant you should be able to build reports (Balance, P&L, Cash Flow, plus consolidated versions).  For Industry reporting you usually chose either Crystal Reports, or Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).  Both methods typically require you to abstract report itself from its database query – or in other words, good idea is to base report on SQL View or Stored Procedure versus trying to use directly Report Wizard.  Please, find Dynamics GP Tables Structure in GP SDK (CD#2) or directly via GP user interface: Tools->Resource Descriptions->Tables.  There also are Dynamics GP ReportWriter reports, such as SOP Blank Invoice Form (where you usually want to place your company graphical logo), Sales Aging Report with Buckets (where you often want to change buckets or add new one).  RW requires some training , which is typically provided directly by your Dynamics GP Partner or Consultant

4. Data Conversion training.  Here you typically need to accurately prepare your data sources (often in Excel) and have several attempts in GP Integration Manager, every time to improve integration quality.  We will help you in Integration setup and verification
