You would think that without the need to learn how to use a clutch, more people in the UK would drive automatic cars. In fact this is not the case. The majority of British drivers choose to drive a car that has a clutch and manual gearbox.

When one is going to learn to drive an automatic you will find learning that much easier than learning in a manual car. The reason for this is that all automatics, whilst not all being exactly the same in their characteristics, have no clutch pedal. You only require one foot to control the foot pedals being the accelerator and brake.

Semi automatics are not treated the same as automatics for the purposes of a driving test. This is because although there is no clutch, the driver still needs to select a gear via the use of a gear stick or lever.
